Californians for Tomorrow, formed in 2026, is focused on public accountability for the full implementation of SB 54, bipartisan legislation passed and signed into California law in 2022.
We are not neutral about the law, the funds it establishes, the historic environmental wins, or the investments promised to local communities across California. We simply want the implementation of a law that California has already enacted and the realization of the progress it was designed to deliver for all Californians, particularly those communities too often left behind.
California debated SB 54, passed it with broad bipartisan support, and signed it into law in 2022. Today, the work is about putting that law into practice and seeing its commitments through. Following through on SB 54 means:
SB 54 was the product of years of negotiation among legislators, industry, environmental leaders, and community advocates. Californians for Tomorrow recognizes the work that brought SB 54 into law and the continued work of implementing it across California.
The stake is specific. SB 54 promised $500 million a year for ten years to the communities hit hardest by plastic pollution, and at least 65% of that fund is committed to those communities by statute. Californians for Tomorrow is here to make sure it lands.
We are not going to tell anyone the fight is over while lawsuits are pending and industry groups are pushing to pause the law. Our work is reading the filings, tracking the deadlines, monitoring proposed actions to slow down progress, thanking and holding leaders accountable, and publishing what we find, including the parts that are behind schedule.
